The Department of Stage Design at JAMU is based on a self-expressing synthesis of work in time, space and context. It is a guided path of conceptual thinking and skills, bringing together instruments of contemporary drama, art and technology. The point of this synthesis is a visual expansion of thematic literary-dramatic as well as open ideal contents.
The Department of Stage Design has been brought to life in 1990 in spite of the post-revolutionary emancipation and the expand of the new Faculty of Theatre at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno. The person behind this was Ing. akad. arch. Jan Konečný, CSc., who had founded the very philosophy of Stage Design tuition at JAMU. Doc. Mgr. Jan Kolegar was the head of the department from 1996 to 1999. The present head of the department is prof. Mgr. Jan Zavarský who has been in charge since 1999. The current people ensuring the skills and proficiency of Stage Art tuition are doc. Mgr. Jana Preková, on of the co-founders of the department, doc. MgA. Marie Jirásková Ph.D. and Mgr. Jan Štěpánek. The assistant professor has been MgA. Kateřina Bláhová since 2000. From 1997 to 2002 doc. Miroslav Melena was a member of the department. Mgr. Pavel Klein, Ph.D. et Ph.D. gave lectures on the Theory and History of Stage Art in 2000–2007 and was followed by Mgr. Barbora Příhodová Ph.D., who remained in the position until 2013. The current lecturer is Mgr. Jitka Ciampi Matulová, Ph.D.
In the 25 years of the existence of the Department of Stage Design many students came and went, many of which are now successful in the field of theater and film scenography, graphics, exhibitions etc.
